What Is a Frenotomy?

A Frenotomy is a small cut to relieve a tight or thick frenulum, usually called a lip or tongue tie. This allows for better oral range of motion and improved breastfeeding in newborn babies & infants. Frenotomies are covered under OHIP through our partner physicians.

Common Tongue/Lip Tie Symptoms

  • Painful Feeding

When your babies mouth wont open fully, or when his or her tongue/lip has a limited range of motion, achieving a good latch is very difficult. A poor latch during feeding will typically cause Mom unnecessary pain. Long term breastfeeding with a poor latch can also lead to sore and chapped nipples. Pain during feeding is the most common cause of early weaning and introduction formula. Frenotomy can eliminate all of these issues and help you feed pain free

  • Short or Long Feedings.

Does your baby, tire after only a few minutes of feeding? (<10 min) He or she may not be getting enough milk. This is often caused by a tongue tie, that limits babies ability extend his or her tongue under the nipple, a motion required to draw adequate milk. Longer feedings can also indicate that milk transfer is compromised. Babies with less severe tongue ties may suffer less fatigue and feed for extended periods (>20 min) before feeling full.

  • Clicking Sound.

Can you hear a clicking sound when your baby is breastfeeding? If so, this is an indication that babies latch or seal with the nipple/breast is breaking. This can be due to a tongue tie or a lip tie. This clicking symptom is most often accompanied by nipple pain and a gassy baby. After a Frenotomy, most Moms notice that the clicking sound is gone indicating an improved latch has been achieved.
